Belgium’s next generation of ice hockey talent took an important step forward in Mechelen on Saturday. Around 175 players from clubs across the country gathered for the RBIHF Talent Pool Evaluation Day, each hoping to earn a place in the development pathway. With approximately 90 U14 players and 85 U16 players taking part, the rink was filled with ambition, energy and potential. Yet the day was about more than selection: it marked the beginning of a season focused on development, follow-up and preparing Belgium’s future U18 and U20 national-team players.
A national opportunity for young Belgian players
On Saturday 19 September, Mechelen welcomed approximately 90 U14 players and 85 U16 players from clubs throughout Belgium for the RBIHF Talent Pool Evaluation Day.
The strong participation demonstrated the ambition that exists among our young players and the important role our clubs play in developing the next generation of Belgian ice hockey talent.
Every participant received the opportunity to show their current abilities, attitude and potential in front of the national development staff. The day also allowed players from different clubs and regions to train and compete alongside one another in a national environment.
More than a single selection day
The RBIHF Talent Pool is a multi-season development initiative for U14, U15 and U16 players. Its purpose goes beyond selecting a team for one tournament or activity.
The programme allows the RBIHF to identify talented players early, monitor their development and offer them additional opportunities alongside the work already taking place within their clubs.
Selected players may participate in Talent Pool days, training camps, practices, games and international development events organised by the RBIHF. These activities give players the chance to test themselves in a different environment, learn from national coaches and gain experience against players and teams from outside Belgium.
By bringing players together repeatedly throughout the U14, U15 and U16 age groups, the programme also helps them build relationships and team understanding before reaching national-team level.
Looking beyond today’s performance
Selection for the Talent Pool is not based on one result, one exercise or one impressive moment.
The national development staff look at different elements of a player’s game, including skating, puck skills, hockey sense, competitiveness and teamwork. Attitude, commitment, behaviour and coachability are also important parts of the evaluation.
Young players develop at different speeds, both physically and mentally. For that reason, the RBIHF considers development potential as well as current performance. A player who is more physically developed today is not automatically the player with the greatest long-term potential.
The Evaluation Day provides important information, but the follow-up continues throughout the season. Players can also be observed during practices, games and future development activities.
A pathway towards U18 and U20
Each age group has its own place within the national development pathway.
At U14, the focus is on discovering potential, inspiring players and strengthening their technical foundations. At U15, players continue developing their game understanding, decision-making and ability to perform within a team. At U16, the programme increasingly prepares players for the demands of international competition and the future U18 national-team pathway.
The ultimate objective is to prepare more Belgian players for our U18 and U20 national teams while giving them the knowledge, experience and support required to continue progressing.
The Talent Pool therefore combines talent identification with long-term player development. It helps the RBIHF follow players over several seasons instead of creating a national selection only shortly before an international competition.
The next step in the selection process
Following the Evaluation Day, the national development staff will review the results and observations collected in Mechelen. These findings will support the selection of the Talent Pool groups for the upcoming season.
For every player, participation in the Evaluation Day was already a valuable achievement. Being selected will create additional development opportunities, but not being selected at this stage does not determine a player’s future.
Development rarely follows a straight line. Players grow, mature and improve at different moments. Continued effort within their clubs, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn can create new opportunities later in the pathway.
