A unique opportunity is coming to Mechelen next week: for the first time, the RBIHF is organising a hands-on Video Coach Certification Course where participants will not only learn how modern video coaching works — they will actually do the job. Guided by an experienced Swedish video coach from Sportway, participants will learn how to analyse games, cut and distribute clips, support coaching staff and set up video workflows for their own team. After two days of instruction, students will be assigned to teams competing in the Multinational Development Series and work directly with coaches during real games. Places are limited.

Video coaching has become an increasingly important part of modern ice hockey. Coaches today have access to more video than ever before, but the real value comes from knowing what to look for, what to select and how to turn footage into useful information for players and coaching staff.

During this five-day course, taking place from Wednesday through Sunday in Mechelen, participants will learn the complete workflow of a video coach.

Learn from professional experience

The course will be led by an experienced Swedish goalie and video coach working with Sportway.

He has been involved in coaching and video analysis since the age of 18 and has worked across all levels of Swedish hockey, from youth and junior hockey through to the SHL, as well as carrying out several assignments for the Swedish federation.

Throughout his career, he has also developed his own software solutions for teams and has played an important role in the development of Sportway's team-account platform.

His experience also extends into professional television production. He works with the television network broadcasting the SHL, supporting experts by finding relevant game situations, selecting clips and preparing drawings and visual analysis that help explain what is happening on the ice.

This combination of hockey knowledge, technology and professional video analysis provides participants with a very practical insight into the role.

What does a Video Coach actually do?

The course will show participants how a video coach can support both a team and its coaching staff.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a Video Coach
  • Knowing what to look for during games
  • Supporting coaches with relevant video information
  • Setting up a video workflow for your own team
  • Working with a video coaching platform
  • Recording and organising game footage
  • Selecting and cutting useful clips
  • Preparing clips for individual players or groups
  • Adding drawings and visual information
  • Distributing clips efficiently
  • Building an effective workflow with the coaching staff

From theory directly into practice

What makes this course particularly special is its direct connection with the Multinational Development Series taking place in Mechelen at the same time.

The first two days of the programme will focus mainly on understanding the role, software, workflow and practical preparation required to work as a video coach.

From there, the course changes completely.

Participants will be assigned to teams participating in the Development Series and will begin working in a real hockey environment.

They will analyse games, select and cut situations, prepare video material and communicate with the coaching staff about what information is required.

Instead of simply discussing what a video coach should do, participants will experience the role themselves.

Five days of development

The course runs from Wednesday until Sunday.

Wednesday & Thursday
Introduction, theory, software, workflow, system setup and preparation.

Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Mainly practical work during the Development Series, including game analysis, clip creation and cooperation with participating coaching staffs.

This hands-on format gives participants the opportunity to learn, practise, receive feedback and immediately improve.

The course fee includes:

  • Federations looking to develop video coaching within their national programmes

Previous experience as a professional video coach is not required.
Participation to the course is NOT LINITEWD to Belgians only, the course is open for any country !

What matters most is an interest in hockey, analysis and learning how video can help players and coaches improve.

A rare opportunity to learn the job by doing it

Courses can explain software.
Courses can explain analysis.

But it is much harder to recreate the pressure, questions and decision-making that occur when a coaching staff needs the right clip from a real game.

That is exactly what this course is designed to provide.

Participants will finish the week having gained not only theoretical knowledge, but also real practical experience working as a Video Coach inside an international development environment.
