Women's SEN Worlds: Belgian 'Golden' Blades also beat host country South Africa Women's SEN Worlds: Belgian 'Golden' Blades also beat host country South Africa

CAPE TOWN - Today, February 26, the national women's team played the last game of its successful World Championship campaign in Cape Town, South Africa. The opponent was host country South Africa. A match that could not change anything for the Belgians in their brilliant performance, namely gold after three consecutive victories against Croatia, Australia, and New Zealand respectively.

However, a 'clean sweep' is the icing on the cake and that's what our Belgian 'Golden' Blades went for. In the first period, they encountered a strong defensive host country. However, the Belgians pepper the South African goal with 15 shots versus 2 against. The strong performance of South African goalie Shaylene Rorke keeps her team in the game. In the 15th minute however, she was outwitted by Anke Steeno who scored the first Belgian goal via Chinouk Van Calster and Lotte De Guchtenaere. The Belgians leave the ice with a narrow lead at the end of the first period.

In the second period, the Belgian Blades keep up the pressure with 16 shots on goal. Halfway through the period, this paid off with Renée De Wolf scoring the second goal, assisted by Eline Leyen and Louise Paulissen. Three minutes later, Chinouk Van Calster widened the gap with a third Belgian goal, Anke Steeno and Femke Bosmans setting it up. In the penultimate minute of the period, the Rhinos manage to remove the zero from the scoreboard. A tip-in on a long shot surprised Charlotte Swinnen, who replaced Nina Van Orshaegen in goal since the start of the second period.

Five minutes into the last period, Louise Paulissen scores the fourth goal for Belgium via Renée De Wolf, which in the end sets the final score. The Belgian women therefore write Belgian sports history once again by being promoted twice in a row at an IIHF World Championship to the highest level of Belgian women's ice hockey ever, namely DIV 2A.

Final score RSA vs. BEL: 1-4 (0-1; 1-2; 0-1) with goals from Anke Steeno, Renée De Wolf, Chinouk Van Calster & Louise Paulissen
