CAPE TOWN - Today, February 21, our national ladies started their World Championship campaign in Cape Town, South Africa. First opponent was Croatia.
Without a doubt, the Belgian Blades made an impact during their first game. Recently promoted from DIV3A, the Belgian ladies dominated the entire match. Croatia could barely resist a well-functioning Belgian team. Lotte De Guchtenaere opened the scoring in the fifth minute to put the Belgians ahead. And it didn't stop there as she drilled the puck three more times against the Croatian nets and manifested herself as the leading scorer of the tournament. The Belgians scored three goals in the first period.
In the second period, our ladies widened the gap further. Again, De Guchteneare who opens the goal scoring in this period. And it goes smoothly because just a few seconds later Paulissen scores the fifth goal. The Belgian ladies keep up the pressure and with results. Van Calster and Maka further increase the score. Croatia can score against once, but that's it.
In the last period, the Belgians score four more times, hence starting their World Championship campaign with a bang.
Final score: 10-1 (3-0; 3-1; 4-0) with goals from De Guchtenaere (4), Steeno, Paulissen (2), Van Calster, Maka and De Terwangne.
